HIV in Ghana: 23,495 test positive in 6 months, Jan to June

Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo — Programme Manager of the National STIs and HIV/AIDS Control Programme A total of 23,495 people tested positive for HIV in the first half of this year (January to June). The figure is two per cent of the 948,094 people who undertook HIV testing from January to June 2022. They were from different segments of the population, namely: men, pregnant women, non-pregnant women, homosexuals and female sex workers. The Programme Manager of the National STIs and HIV/AIDS Control Programme, Dr Stephen Ayisi Addo, who made this known in an interview with the Daily Graphic in Accra, said even though last year’s half year figure was 25,545, this year’s figure was too high. “The figure for this new infection is too high, so we need to intensify education to let people know that HIV is still real; it is around and there must be constant reminders. We have to let people know that they need to stick to the prevention strategies, whether they are children or adults,” he said. He sa...

        Late Dr Samuel Nuamah Donkor   Former Health Minister under the Rawlings administration Hon. Samuel Nuamah Donkor has died at age 64. Multiple reports from various news outlets have confirmed that he died on Sunday, August 13, 2022. However, the cause of his death is currently not known but close relations have been paying glowing tributes of him on social media. Hon. Samuel Nuamah was Ashanti Regional Minister under the Jerry John Rawlings government. He served diligently as one of the best Regional Ministers and was one time the Managing Director of STC. Biography   Samuel Nuamah Donkor was born on September 5, 1958 to Opanin Kwabena Agyekum, Gyaasehene of Asokore-Koforidua in the Eastern Region of Ghana and Madam Abena Akyaamah also from Asokore- Koforidua. 25 year old Zambian wins BBC News Komla Dumor Award

By Richard Agodzo Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya is the seventh winner of the award Zambian TV and radio presenter Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya has won the 2022 BBC News Komla Dumor Award. At 25, Buyoya is the youngest recipient of the award, launched in 2015, and the first of the seven winners so far from southern Africa. He is currently a TV host and reporter with Diamond Television in Zambia, where he started work five years ago. The award was created to honour Komla Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014. Buyoya follows in the footsteps of Victoria Rubadiri, Solomon Serwanjja, Waihiga Mwaura, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira. The runner-up for this year's prize is Ivory Coast's Lindsay Aida Guei, who presents her own talk show on Canal+ Elles, an Africa-focused TV channel.
