Your Creation makes a difference for National Development
By Richard Agodzo
The Executive director of Densu Associate, Dolores Dickson has urged students to venture into social entrepreneurship to help in national development.
Speaking on the theme “Social Entrepreneurship”, Madam Dickson focused on explaining the concept and inspiring students’ creativity and outlooks to new possible methodologies to serving global development that is equitable, empowering and ethical.
Addressing the final year communication students of the African University College of Communications, she revealed that the youth of this generation seem to follow the trend of the purposeful motive in the establishment of a social enterprise and that is PROFIT.
According to her, profit is secondary, but a natural result of social entrepreneurship. “Social entrepreneurs pursue value creation over value capture and thus are a viable pathway for both employment and social change” she said.
“Becoming a social entrepreneur will help communities in which one lives to develop, and in so doing help you realize your material ambitions” she added.
The over a dozen years experienced CEO explained that, Africa have the potential to make the world a better place. As upcoming communicators, the misrepresentation of Africa to the global world has taken over the media and so doing new potentials can change the narrative.
‘As students pursuing communication, we have realized the media is a big tool to pursue change and you can use it to your advantage”, she said. Africa is projected to the world as the poorest continent with flies all over, children with running noses and poor slums.
She urged the students’ to create their own environment and make a difference by setting up, take charge and let the crowd follow their new story of change.
Dolores Dickson has about 20 years of experience conducting social impact and international development programs. She served as the first Executive Director for the Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) in both Africa and North America. Dolores has worked with foundations, philanthropists, private and public sector, bi-lateral and multi-lateral agencies on education, gender, youth engagement and entrepreneurship. She has intimate knowledge of the circumstances in African countries, Canada, the USA, and the UK.
