ETHNIC NUISSANCE AS GHANA’S ATHLETE SET RECORD
Ghana’s athlete Joseph Amoah set his personal best record at a time of 8.92 seconds at the 2022 World Athletics Championship.
Facebook user has taken personal to condemn a post from one MeYɛ Asanteni.
According to post, he singularly gave accolades to Joseph Amoah for his split time of 8.92 seconds. The post read, “Asante Pride ……. 2022 World Athletics Championships, making Prempeh College and Asanteman proud. A product of inter- Co and Super- zonal competition in Ashanti region.”
The post described Joseph as a Ghanaian racer among the fastest athletes in the men’s 4x100 relay with a split time of 8.29 seconds.
“He was Ghana’s anchor and his 8.92 seconds was the FASTEST time in the entire 4x100m heat among all the competitors”, the post added.
Indeed Joseph Amoah’s split time beat America’s Marvin Bracy and German’s Lucas Ansah-Preprah.
Comments that followed the post of the said MeYɛ Asanteni were demeaning and angled to ethnic interest.
The first comment from Kwasi Opuni said, “He made Ghana proud. Let’s limit it to that for the sake of unity.” One Larry Gbevlo-Lartey also said what is wrong with an Ashanti platform celebrating a fellow Ashanti? He does not get it.
The rebuttals begun when others did not agree to the idea that 4x100 relay is raced by four athletes why was one singled out to be celebrated.
Andrew Mante comments read, “Pointless Tribalism. Unnecessary divisiveness by some who have very little positivity and unified progress to think about.” “Tribalism is a cultural thing in Ghana. So pervasive”, “You have a brain injury. Is it TV3 or an Ashanti platform? When Church of Pentecost said same about the taxi driver, did you complain? When the Voltarians said so about Big Ivy the rapper, did you complain? What kind of nonsense is that? This is an Ashanti platform so why can’t they be proud of their own”, replies from Peter Ansah and Edward Boakye Amissah respectively.
Others comments included, “Have you ever seen a tall man like this in Ashanti, the tallest person is in Ashanti is about 2.5 feet”, by Simone Nana Yaw Nketiah.
